install VMwaretools Tools 6.5.0-118166
  - point the cdrom to the external linux.iso file
  - copy the VMwareTools-6.5.0-118166.tar.gz file to /tmp and extract it there
  - delete the .tar.gz file
  - cd /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib
  - start the installer with sudo ./vmware-install.pl
    accept everything with <enter>
  - video resolution: choose 12 instead of 11 (1024*768)
  - repoint the cdrom to the physical drive

shutdown and restart

set screen resolution once again to 1024*768 0Hz

Synaptic
  remove openoffice.org-core
terminal:
  sudo apt-get --purge remove
  sudo apt-get autoremove
  sudo apt-get clean
  history -c

create a boot commands file that mounts all for CIFS/SMBFS
terminal:
  sudo gedit

create a file named /etc/init.d/local with this contents:

mount -a

terminal:
  sudo chmod 755 /etc/init.d/local
  sudo update-rc.d local start 98 2 3 4 5 .
  sudo mkdir /etc/rc.d/
  sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/local /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Beware of the . in  2 3 4 5 .

workaround for clipboard integration and host window resizing:
create a file with this contents in user's home:

/usr/bin/vmware-user

  sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/vmware-user

System->Preferences->Sessions->Startup Programs tab
  add this script
