I guess you could call me a 'block scalper'. I've been trading 10k-30k blocks of stocks such as Dell and INTC (mostly Dell) for .10-.30/day. Not in every day, and I will sit out for longer periods of time if I don't like the market, but I've been able to consistently average high four digits in profit each week over the two years. In addition, I take some larger bets a couple times a year when I feel the market warrants it, or I observe something that seems to be somewhat 'repeatable'.
Case in point - at the end of 2000, I was watching WCOM collapse, and time and time again saw stocks like it take a nice quick rise at the beginning of the next year. Had my trigger on the buy button for 40k shares of WCOM on December 31,2000 at the 13 level, but chickened out. Watched the stock go from 13 to almost 22 during the first two weeks of 2001... Turns out that was pretty much IT for WCOM in 2001, but who cares, the trade would have worked quite well. So, to make a long story longer, I wanted to try the same this year. Had been watching EMC not really participate very much in the fall 2001 rally, so picked up 60k shares at the 13.40 level on December 31,2001. Sold all 60k on January 4th of this year at 17.40....
The downside for me here is I tend to miss some nice opportunities because I try to pick my spots very carefully - for obvious reasons.
